Cough and Cold Remedy

Almost every friend I know has a version of this recipe tucked away in their recipe box! Every year we fill a jar with raw honey, diced fresh ginger root and lemon slices. As those marinade together, they become a ready help during cough and cold season. Although that mixture tends to get added to tea during cold and flu season, the recipe I am sharing here is for seriously kicking a cold to the curb!

As always, remember that I’m not a doctor. I’m a wife, a mom, a friend, a neighbor. We learn tips and tricks along the way that work for us, but there is no substitute for common sense! I don’t proclaim this to be a cure-all, but rather something that our family finds valuable. Again, do your own research and make wise choices for you and yours.

This recipe is super simple (like most of the stuff I do!) and it’s my favorite kind because it’s totally dump it in, shake it up and you’re good to go!

When you pick ingredients, always use the best ingredients you can. Let’s talk about a few of them!


Cayenne is believed to be a heart healthy, immune boosting antioxidant that helps with inflammation, digestion and congestion. It’s the perfect addition to this mixture! Be sure to pick an organic variety.


Another antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, garlic strengthens your immune system and is a powerhouse when it comes to fighting off colds and flus. Be sure to use fresh garlic that you mince your own self and choose organic.

Ginger Root:

Commonly, we know that ginger helps with digestion and upset stomach issues. It’s another ingredient that is anti-inflammatory and fights infection. Again, choose organic and peel and mince this your own self at home.

Lemon Juice:

Citrus has long been known for it’s Vitamin C content and lemon does not disappoint here! It is known to boost your immune system, prevent coughs and colds and support gut health! By now you’ve noticed a theme… organic, please!

Raw Honey:

The best honey you can get comes from your own home town. Local, raw honey has all of the small doses of allergens that are common to your area which really helps your immune system negotiate allergy season with efficiency! Raw honey is a powerhouse of anti- everything! Anti-allergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal… it improves digestion and boosts immunity and soothes your sore throat! Is it any wonder that this is the primary ingredient in all of our immune supporting mixtures here on the Farm?

Apple Cider Vinegar:

You guessed it! Pick a raw, unfiltered, organic one that comes with its “mother”! Apple Cider Vinegar aids in digestion, improves your immune system and is an anti-oxidant.

Combine all of these in a pint-sized mason jar with a tight fitting lid, and give it a good shake. Store in the refrigerator. This mixture does an amazing job cutting our sick time in half or better! We take about a Tablespoon as adults and teaspoons for the kids. Start small… unless you’re like me and really actually like the taste! Stay healthy!

This winds up being a thin liquid and the ginger and garlic tend to stay suspended so give it a shake before each use!

Homemade Cough and Cold Remedy

Servings 16 Tbsp


  • 1/2 Cup Raw Honey
  • 1/4 Cup Organic Lemon Juice
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Organic Garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Organic Ginger
  • 1/4 Cup Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Dried Organic Cayenne


  • Combine all ingredients in a pint-sized jar with a tight fitting lid.
  • Shake the jar to combine.
  • Store in the refrigerator.
